Federal workers terminated during the Trump administration could be eligible for stimulus checks amounting to $1,000.

Two councilmembers from Prince George’s County, Maryland have suggested these payments to assist individuals who have experienced job loss.

Their aim is to offer direct support to residents impacted by layoffs, ensuring they receive additional financial resources to manage during tough times.

These payments are designed to ease some of the financial strains faced by those who were unemployed during that era.

The proposed stimulus checks would deliver crucial financial support to workers who have lost jobs, helping them navigate through this challenging period.

Proponents of the initiative argue that these additional funds could be of great benefit to those in need.

Conversely, opponents of the initiative express concerns about the feasibility of such government funding.

PROPOSED LEGISLATION

Prince George’s County Councilmember Wala Blegay has stated her desire for a one-time $1,000 stimulus payment for federal workers who lost their jobs due to recent government cutbacks.

The county is home to more than 70,000 federal employees.

The legislation, referred to as the “Federal Worker Emergency Assistance Act,” seeks to provide financial relief to these laid-off federal workers.

If it passes, the bill would allocate $1,000 payments to those who lost their jobs.

However, individuals who accepted voluntary buyouts would not be eligible for this assistance.

“I think we’ll face challenges with affordability, especially coming up to budget season, but we are exploring the possibility of reallocating a million or two to initiate this, even if it starts off small,” Blegay commented.

The precise number of federal employees in Prince George’s County who have lost their jobs remains unclear.

Public officials are apprehensive about the potential negative impact of these layoffs on the county’s economy.

COMMUNITY RESPONSES

Meanwhile, some critics question the fairness of providing benefits to laid-off federal employees that are not available to the broader public.

“I’ve got to express my disagreement with all these layoffs,” a Maryland resident told Fox 5.

“However, it wouldn’t seem just because others are also struggling.”

“I’m honestly torn on this,” another resident commented.

“They will still receive unemployment and its benefits.”
