Amid AI Concerns, Siri Struggles to Answer: ‘What Month Is It?’

Apple has officially announced the postponement of its upcoming “more personalized” Siri, which was hinted at during WWDC 2024. As we debate whether Apple’s AI can match the capabilities of other tools, Siri continues to falter on straightforward inquiries, like “what month is it?”

14 years later, Siri still can’t answer basic questions

As highlighted by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, following a discussion on Reddit, Apple’s virtual assistant is failing to identify the current month. I conducted my own test, and Siri responded with, “Sorry, I don’t understand.” Many other users have reported similar experiences.

Things become even more awkward as Reddit users have discovered other seemingly simple questions that Siri is also unable to address. For instance, asking “what is the current month?” leads Siri to incorrectly assert, “It’s Saturday, March 1, 2025.”

In contrast, other AI assistants like Gemini and ChatGPT successfully answered the same questions accurately.

When Siri debuted in 2011, Apple touted the assistant as a means for users to engage naturally with their devices. However, nearly 14 years later, it appears that Apple still has not resolved the issues surrounding Siri’s functionality.

Last June, the company assured users that a completely redesigned Siri, driven by advanced AI, would soon be available. Apple showcased videos demonstrating Siri’s ability to answer queries using personal context gleaned from data on the device, including photos, emails, and messages. The assistant was also set to benefit from on-screen content recognition for improved context. Thus far, however, we’ve only seen a new animation that merely covers up the same, outdated Siri.

It is my sincere hope that Apple will prioritize addressing Siri’s shortcomings following the developments surrounding Apple Intelligence’s announcement last year. After all, we are still waiting for features that were promised not just last year, but back in 2011.
