Another City Distributes Free AirTags to Tackle Car Theft

While AirTags are not specifically intended to deter theft, they have proven to be a helpful resource. Recently, the Denver Police Department announced its initiative to distribute hundreds of AirTags in an effort to combat car thefts.

The Denver Police Department is collaborating with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) to provide 450 AirTag and Samsung SmartTag tracking devices to locals, as reported by Gizmodo.

This week, the Denver Police Department shared the following announcement:

To help prevent auto thefts in Denver and to facilitate the quick recovery of stolen vehicles and their suspects, the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) is working alongside the Denver Police Department (DPD) to offer a limited number of free AirTag or SmartTag Bluetooth location trackers to Denver residents who sign up for the DenverTrack auto theft prevention program during this promotional event.

It’s important to note that while an AirTag cannot directly stop theft, it can act as a deterrent and assist in the recovery of a stolen vehicle.

Importantly, if your car is stolen, you will need to provide the police with the location data. The Denver Police Department will not have direct access to this information. You must add the AirTag to your Apple Account, place it in your vehicle, and use the Find My app to track it. If your car is stolen, you can then share its location with law enforcement to aid in retrieval.

“In the unfortunate event a vehicle is stolen, it is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to inform responding officers of their vehicle’s location,” stated the Denver Police Department.

Denver is certainly not the first city to employ an AirTag strategy to address car theft issues:

Residents of Denver who wish to receive a free AirTag can register on the city’s official website.
