This week, Anthropic has rolled out a significant update for its AI chatbot, Claude. The innovative platform now has the ability to search the web in real time, delivering current information and enhancing its utility for research activities.
Claude now features real-time web search capabilities
According to a recent blog announcement, Claude has gained access to “the latest events and information,” which increases the precision of tasks that require up-to-date data. Previously, Claude was dependent on periodically updated large language models, which restricted its knowledge of recent occurrences.
The platform will provide direct quotes linked to their original sources, allowing users to verify the accuracy of the information provided.
“When Claude gathers data from the web to formulate responses, it includes direct citations, which makes it easy to fact-check sources. Rather than manually searching for results, Claude processes and presents the relevant sources in a conversational manner. This upgrade enriches Claude’s vast knowledge with real-time insights, offering answers grounded in the latest information,” the company states.
Anthropic emphasizes that Claude’s web search functionality could be particularly advantageous for researchers, financial analysts needing real-time market data, and consumers looking to compare features and prices of various products across multiple platforms.
Users have the option to enable or disable web searches while interacting with Claude, akin to the optional ChatGPT Search feature.
Currently, the web search function is in beta testing for all paid Claude users in the United States. Anthropic has indicated plans to broaden access to more countries and to free users in the future. For US subscribers, simply activate the web search option in your profile settings and initiate a conversation with the Claude 3.7 model.
