Apple Aims for March Launch of New Wall-Mounted Smart Display, According to Report

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Apple is looking to launch its first smart home device powered by Apple Intelligence as soon as March.

This new product will be a “wall-mounted display” designed to control various appliances, facilitate videoconferencing, and utilize AI for navigating applications.

Referred to by the codename J490, as originally reported by DMN in September, the device is expected to feature a square display approximately 6 inches in size, which Bloomberg notes is similar to having two iPhones placed side by side, surrounded by a thick edge.

Additionally, it will likely include a camera positioned at the top center, a rechargeable built-in battery, and integrated speakers. The design resembles that of a “traditional home-security panel” and will be available in both silver and black color options.

Furthermore, Bloomberg states that there will be “bases with extra speakers” intended for use in areas like kitchens, nightstands, or desks.

Regarding software, Bloomberg reports:

The device will operate on a brand new system dubbed Pebble, equipped with sensors to detect user proximity. This capability allows it to modify its interface based on distance; for instance, it might display temperature information when users are further away, but switch to thermostat controls as they get closer.

This innovative operating system will also provide a customizable home screen where users can access widgets for stock tickers, weather, and calendar appointments. Alternatively, they can design the interface to prioritize key home controls. It will include a dock for quickly launching preferred apps and an iPhone-style grid for software icons.

Apple has reportedly “considered introducing an app store alongside the device” but has decided to exclude this feature from the initial launch. The device will integrate with HomeKit for managing smart home devices.

Apple revealed Apple Intelligence during WWDC in June and rolled out initial features for iPhone and Mac users last month. However, the company has yet to provide insights into its Apple Intelligence plans for the HomePod smart speaker. This device aims to merge Siri and Apple Intelligence into the home in a completely fresh format.
