Apple Allegedly Preparing a ‘Feature-Rich’ Update for visionOS 3

Although a new model of the Apple Vision Pro won’t be available in 2025 as some anticipated, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has indicated that a ‘feature-rich release’ for visionOS 3 is on the agenda for this year’s WWDC.

Mark Gurman notes that a second-generation Vision Pro featuring a new M-series chip is still in development, along with more affordable versions of the headset. However, neither of these releases is expected to occur in 2025, particularly since the current headset still utilizes the M2 chipset from 2022, which will be outdated by the time of a refresh.

On the other hand, while plans for new hardware may seem somewhat underwhelming, Apple’s software initiatives are quite promising.

Just last month, Apple launched the visionOS 2.4 beta, which integrates Apple Intelligence into the headset and introduces a much-anticipated Vision Pro app for iPhone. It also includes Spatial Gallery, with a public release slated for April.

As thrilling as these updates are, they are not the end of the enhancements. Reports suggest that visionOS 3 will also be a significant upgrade—though Gurman has not provided many specifics:

All indications suggest that the Vision Products Group is reallocating resources to explore other device formats. However, Apple cannot afford to let the Vision Pro fade away; it has invested significantly in it and must continue delivering updates for visionOS (with the upcoming third edition set to be quite comprehensive, as I’ve heard).

While new hardware would certainly be exciting, especially if it came at a lower price point, it seems Apple’s primary focus is on ensuring that visionOS remains as robust as possible. This strategy is likely to yield benefits in the long run.
