Apple Ceases Signing of iOS 18.3.1, Preventing Downgrades from iOS 18.3.2

Just one week after the public release of iOS 18.3.2, Apple has ceased signing the previous version, iOS 18.3.1. This change means that iPhone and iPad users currently on a newer version can no longer revert to the earlier software version.

Apple restricts downgrade from iOS 18.3.2 to iOS 18.3.1

The iOS 18.3.2 update, released on March 11, included a critical security fix. Apple indicated that the update addressed a vulnerability in WebKit that permitted harmful web content to bypass the sandbox. The company acknowledged that this vulnerability was exploited in a “highly sophisticated attack targeting specific individuals.”

On the other hand, iOS 18.3.1 was launched on February 10, also featuring a targeted security patch. This update remedied a flaw that allowed those with physical access to an iPhone or iPad to deactivate USB Restricted Mode on a locked device. This feature requires the device’s password for any USB connections to a computer or other devices.

Maintaining up-to-date software on your device is crucial for safeguarding against hackers and other threats. This is why Apple discontinues signing older iOS versions. However, this can leave users facing issues with the latest iOS unable to revert to the previous version.

Currently, the only downgrade option available is from iOS 18.4 beta to iOS 18.3.2. If you possess a compatible iPhone or iPad, ensure you stay updated by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update.
