Apple Clarifies the Placement of the M4 Mac Mini Power Button on the Bottom

In a bold redesign, Apple has relocated the power button on the M4 Mac mini from its previous position at the bottom to the back of the device. This unexpected change has sparked discussion, as noted in a recent interview featuring Apple executives Greg Joswiak and John Ternus.

During an interview shared on the Chinese video platform Bilibili, which was covered by ITHome, Ternus and Joswiak elaborated that the significantly reduced size of the Mac mini necessitated finding a new location for the power button.

They mentioned (translated):

We’ve considerably miniaturized it, making it about half the size of the prior generation. Therefore, we had to place the power button in the most suitable location, given its compact nature. It’s easy to access—simply position your finger there and press the button.

Moreover, the key point is that most users rarely need to use the power button on their Mac. I can hardly recall the last time I powered on a Mac.

Numerous teardowns have also highlighted the extensive efforts Apple made to make the Mac mini as small and efficient as possible.

DMN’s Perspective

For the vast majority of users, this change is a minor concern. For those who power down their computer at the end of each day, this signals that Apple believes there’s no necessity for such an action.
