In 2022, Apple unveiled a revamped version of CarPlay, dubbed “CarPlay 2.0.” Despite this announcement, the new iteration has yet to debut, leading many to speculate whether Apple has quietly abandoned the initiative due to missed deadlines. However, DMN has uncovered indications that work on the project is ongoing.
CarPlay 2.0 Continues Development
Analysis of the iOS 18.3 beta 2, released to developers recently, reveals that Apple remains committed to the CarPlay 2.0 project. The latest beta version includes multiple mentions of “CarPlayHybridInstrument” in the Maps application. This feature was showcased in Apple’s promotional images for the updated CarPlay, allowing for the display of navigation directions alongside the speedometer and other dashboard instruments.
Furthermore, today’s beta also includes several new codes that hint at the capability to control the vehicle’s air conditioning through CarPlay, another anticipated feature of CarPlay 2.0.
For context, CarPlay is Apple’s iOS interface designed for car infotainment systems, providing an optimized display when an iPhone is connected. In June 2022, Apple announced its collaboration with automotive manufacturers to integrate CarPlay more deeply, enabling drivers to manage not just media but also critical vehicle functions directly from the CarPlay interface.
Initially, Apple aimed to release the first vehicles featuring the new CarPlay experience in 2023; however, that did not materialize. The company then set a new target for late 2024, but that too has slipped away without any updates. So far, there has been no new timeline provided for the rollout of vehicles with the next-generation CarPlay.
The reasons behind these delays remain unclear. Some speculate that automakers may be reluctant to grant Apple extensive control over their vehicle systems, as seen with GM’s decision to remove CarPlay from its electric vehicles. Alternatively, it’s possible that CarPlay 2.0 simply isn’t fully developed yet, as Apple continues to enhance relevant features in iOS 18.
While we await an official statement from Apple, it’s encouraging to learn that the company is still actively working on the project, providing hope for those eager to experience the new CarPlay in the future.
