Once again, Apple is showing its support for World Aids Day on December 1st by committing to donate $5 for each qualifying purchase made between November 29 and December 8.
Update: The company has set a maximum donation limit of $3M, and (RED) has confirmed on Twitter that Apple has reached this cap, donating the full amount.
This marks the 18th year that Apple has contributed to The Global Fund, which aims to combat HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria.
The Global Fund
Founded in 2002, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has been credited with saving an impressive 65 million lives.
The Global Fund is a global alliance dedicated to eliminating HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria. We are committed to creating a healthier, safer, and more equitable world for everyone. Each year, we raise and invest over US$5 billion to combat lethal infectious diseases, address the injustices that sustain them, and enhance health systems and pandemic preparedness in over 100 of the most affected countries.
We collaborate with world leaders, communities, civil society, health professionals, and the private sector to discover and implement the most impactful solutions on a global scale. Our partnership has saved 65 million lives since 2002.
As the largest multilateral funder of health initiatives in low- and middle-income nations, we have disbursed over US$65 billion since 2002. We believe that with science, financial resources, political commitment, and strong leadership, we can conquer the most formidable disease challenges.
The Global Fund demonstrates that by working collaboratively with civil society, governments, businesses, philanthropists, and communities affected by these diseases, we can save lives and significantly alter the trajectory of HIV, TB, and malaria.
Apple Supporting World Aids Day
Apple’s commitment to the fund began shortly after its inception. A significant part of this effort involves their partnership with (PRODUCT)RED, producing limited edition Apple products in red, with up to 50% of the profits directed to the fund.
The debut of the (RED) iPod Nano initiated one of (RED)’s most successful collaborations, which later expanded to include the immensely popular iPhone [and Apple Watch]. Since 2006, Apple has contributed $250 million to support HIV testing, treatment, and counseling. Apple’s efforts have inspired other companies in the tech industry and beyond to engage in the movement.
Furthermore, Apple regularly makes donations based on sales from all their products during the World Aids Day period.
This year, from November 29 to December 8, Apple will donate $5 for every purchase made using Apple Pay on apple.com, through the Apple Store app, or in physical Apple Stores. These donations will support the Global Fund in its fight against AIDS and contribute to vital health programs that save lives.
Typically, Apple also changes the Apple Store logos to red on December 1st.
