As per Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is currently not developing a new iteration of its AirPort wireless router. Nevertheless, there are plans for a different device that could function as a wireless access point, so there’s still reason for optimism.
Recently, we learned more about Apple’s proprietary wireless networking chip, known as Proxima. This chip is expected to be integrated into several home-related devices, including the Apple TV and HomePod, and later in the iPhone 17 and new Mac models.
Notably, this new chip is reported to be sophisticated enough that Apple may opt to use it to create a wireless router:
The Proxima chip possesses such advanced capabilities that it could theoretically transform a device like an Apple TV or HomePod into a wireless access point. Similar products have been launched by Google, combining Wi-Fi routers and smart speakers.
Gurman points out that the wireless capabilities in the upcoming Apple TV and HomePod may not be prominently featured, assuming Apple decides to activate the wireless access point functionality at all.
Regardless, it’s encouraging to know that this option exists. If Apple chooses to pursue it, we could see a new Apple-designed wireless access point, akin to the AirPort Express, making a comeback. Many have longed for this, especially since Apple discontinued its AirPort lineup, with the last device being launched in 2013.
