According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is intensifying its efforts to develop a new version of the Studio Display. This monitor made its debut in 2022 and has not seen any updates since then. While specific details regarding the upcoming refresh are sparse, it is expected to complement the new M5 MacBook Pros.
Recently, display analyst Ross Young reported that Apple is developing a new Studio Display featuring mini-LED technology. This claim has now been supported by Gurman from Bloomberg:
Reports indicate that Apple is currently testing prototypes of a display code-named J427, which is expected to launch by 2026. This display will serve as the successor to the existing Studio Display, rather than the Pro Display XDR, and will likely maintain a design similar to that of the 2022 model.
While Gurman’s report lacks extensive details, he does offer an intriguing note about Apple’s high-end monitor, the Pro Display XDR. Since its 2019 launch, this model has seen minimal attention from Apple. It notably lacks several features found in the newer and more affordable Studio Display, such as an integrated webcam, built-in speakers, and a reasonably priced stand.
Despite these limitations, it appears that Apple does not have a second-generation version of the Pro Display XDR planned. Gurman stated that a new iteration is “less of a priority for Apple.” Nevertheless, the company remains dedicated to the professional market, with new Mac Pro and Mac Studio models confirmed to be on the way.
Additionally, he mentions that Apple will “likely” eventually explore a larger-than-24-inch iMac.
