Apple Has Just Addressed One of CarPlay’s Major Usability Challenges

On Friday, Apple launched the iOS 18.4 beta, introducing several exciting new features. Among these are Priority Notifications powered by Apple Intelligence, a newly added Food section within the Apple News app, and other enhancements. Notably, a subtle change related to CarPlay emerged that might have been overlooked – particularly concerning larger displays.

As reported by MacRumors, the latest iOS 18.4 update allows CarPlay to support a third row of app icons, increasing the total from two. This enhancement enables CarPlay to optimize the use of spacious built-in car displays more effectively.

However, this new feature isn’t activated in every vehicle. The third row of icons is only visible on larger car displays, though the specific size requirements remain somewhat ambiguous. It’s important to note that it’s not universally available. MacRumors highlights that this new arrangement is available in the Toyota Tundra, which can be outfitted with displays as large as 14 inches.

This update is a significant improvement. With the continuous incorporation of larger displays in vehicles, the previous iteration of CarPlay hadn’t fully adapted to these advancements, and the anticipated CarPlay 2 is still not available.

This new feature provides a practical solution for owners of larger screens, enhancing usability significantly. Users will no longer need to navigate through numerous home screen pages frequently.
