iOS 18.4 introduces a range of significant and minor enhancements for iPhone users, but for those in the EU, a particularly noteworthy feature has arrived: Apple Intelligence is now fully accessible for EU users.
iOS 18.4 Brings Apple Intelligence to EU Users
Shortly after Apple unveiled its first set of Apple Intelligence features at WWDC last June, the company had to deliver disappointing news: AI would not be available for EU users at launch or until further notice.
The reason behind this was the complex EU regulations Apple needed to adhere to.
This restriction did not affect the Mac, as the iPhone and iPad were subject to a different set of regulations under the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
However, after a prolonged period of waiting, Apple finally had some good news for iPhone users. Just as Apple Intelligence was rolled out for public use, Apple announced that the feature would also be available in the EU—set to be released in April via a software update.
The update was delivered a day earlier, coinciding with the launch of iOS 18.4 on March 31.
The timing of EU support beautifully complements Apple’s expanded language capabilities in iOS 18.4.
Apple Intelligence Features Now Available in the EU
Now, iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPadOS 18.4 can utilize the same Apple Intelligence features that much of the world has already enjoyed. These features include:
- Writing Tools: Employ system-wide tools to proofread, rephrase, or format your text.
- Photo Cleanup: Effortlessly remove unwanted elements from your images.
- Notification Summaries: Gain more actionable and insightful notifications through AI summaries.
- Genmoji: Create personalized emojis for any app.
- ChatGPT in Siri: Siri can access knowledge from ChatGPT, allowing direct queries to ChatGPT.
- Image Playground: Generate unique AI images in various animation or illustration styles.
- Visual Intelligence: Use your iPhone’s Camera Control or Action button to obtain relevant information from your surroundings.
Previously, EU users could not access Apple Intelligence at all, regardless of device region or language settings, due to location-based blocking by Apple.
However, this has changed. As of iOS 18.4, the only region currently restricted from AI access is China—and there is hope that even this will change soon.
