Apple Introduces iPhone 16e: An Affordable New Option in the iPhone 16 Series. Here’s Everything You Need to Know.

On Wednesday, Apple introduced the iPhone 16e, a more affordable addition to the iPhone 16 series that includes Apple Intelligence tools.

The iPhone 16e takes the place of the iPhone SE, which was last released in 2022 as Apple’s budget-friendly iPhone model. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e is cheaper than the standard iPhone 16, which retails for $800, but higher than the SE, which originally sold for $430.

This new device features Apple’s proprietary C1 cellular modem chip, designed to enhance the phone’s AI capabilities. The AI tools can summarize text and audio, generate new emojis, and have improved the functionality of Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri. Additionally, Apple highlighted the enhanced battery life and camera quality of the new phone compared to the now discontinued SE.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e will start this Friday, with availability in stores set for February 28.

“We are thrilled to introduce the iPhone 16e as a robust, more budget-friendly choice that makes the iPhone experience accessible to a broader audience,” stated Apple Vice President Kaiann Drance.

Since last June, Apple has been promoting its venture into AI, gradually launching new features. However, the full suite of advanced capabilities has not yet been entirely rolled out in the U.S., with some areas of the world still lacking access to the technology.

Apple has experienced a decline in market presence in China, a region where iPhone’s AI features are still unavailable. The timeline for their release in that market remains uncertain.

Apart from its AI functionalities, the iPhone 16e is equipped with a 16.1-inch display and has removed the home screen button that SE users are accustomed to. The new model will also feature facial recognition technology for unlocking the device.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Apple shares rose to nearly $245, which is below the stock’s peak price of approximately $260 reached in late December.
