Apple Introduces Proximity Pairing for Mac in macOS 15.4

Users of iPhones and iPads are well-acquainted with the feature known as “proximity pairing.” This capability first emerged with iOS 11, enabling users to easily transfer backups and other data between devices by simply bringing them close together. Now, it seems Apple is gearing up to incorporate proximity pairing setup on the Mac.

Proximity pairing setup on the Mac

Insights from DMN within the iOS 18.4 code indicate that the Mac is set to receive proximity pairing, mirroring features available on the iPhone and iPad. This system will guide users to use an iOS device to scan a pairing code displayed on the Mac, allowing the import of certain settings, such as Apple Account login details, from the iPhone or iPad.

Although macOS currently has proximity pairing capabilities, they are limited to Macs managed through MDM solutions like Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, or Apple Business Essentials. Presently, users setting up a new Mac must either manually input their Apple Account information or restore settings from another Mac using Thunderbolt.

The new code included in iOS 18.4 suggests that this feature will soon be accessible to all users with an upcoming software update, likely macOS 15.4.

Both iOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4 are significant upgrades, marking the first time Apple Intelligence support expands to additional languages. The AI features are now operational in French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese, in addition to localized English for users in Singapore and India.

The upcoming update on the Mac will also introduce the new Mail app, which previously arrived on the iPhone with iOS 18.2.

Apple has announced that these software updates will be available to the public in April.
