Apple is Revamping the Magic Mouse: What We Know So Far

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is set to revamp the Magic Mouse – marking the first major redesign since its debut in 2009. Over its fifteen-year lifespan, the mouse has maintained a similar look, with the primary changes being the transition from AA batteries to Lightning in 2015, and from Lightning to USB-C expected in 2024.

However, changes are on the horizon.

Charge Port Positioning

A major point of contention with the Magic Mouse has been the location of the charging port. Users must connect it from the bottom when charging, which renders the mouse unusable during that time.

While some fans argue that this setup benefits battery health, others contend that with infrequent charging – typically every six weeks – it’s not a significant issue. Regardless, the inconvenience persists.

Fortunately, Gurman states that this will be addressed in the next-generation Magic Mouse:

Apple aims to develop a more contemporary design while resolving ongoing complaints — particularly the charging port placement.

So, this will soon become a thing of the past.

Ergonomics

Details about the upcoming Magic Mouse’s appearance are still vague, but it will be thoroughly reimagined, ideally focusing on improved ergonomics. Apple is looking to create a device that is more comfortable to use, potentially similar to the MX Master design:

The good news is that a new Magic Mouse is in development. Reports suggest that Apple’s design team has been creating prototypes in recent months, striving for a design that resonates better with modern usability.

In today’s computing environment, which increasingly relies on touch screens, voice commands, and hand gestures, the mouse’s importance has shifted.

Many Mac users appreciate the Logitech MX Master for its comfort and extra functionalities, though it sacrifices some of the multi-touch gestures that the Magic Mouse provides. It would be exciting to see Apple blend the best features from both devices.

Expected Release Timeline

The new Magic Mouse is still in its early development stages and is unlikely to launch until 2026. Gurman states not to anticipate any releases in the next 12 to 18 months. Additionally, Apple is said to be working on a redesigned MacBook Pro featuring OLED technology, which could debut alongside the new Magic Mouse.
