Apple Mandates Upgrade to New HomeKit Architecture for Users

With the launch of iOS 16, Apple introduced a revamped architecture for the Home app, designed to enhance the user experience with HomeKit devices. Up until now, users have had the choice to upgrade, but Apple is now set to mandate this upgrade for all users.

iOS users will be required to transition to the new HomeKit architecture

Insights gleaned from the DMN review of iOS 18.4 beta 3, which was made available to developers on Monday, indicate that the Home app will cease functioning with the previous HomeKit architecture. A newly added message within the system advises users that support for the old Apple Home version “will come to an end soon” and urges them to “update now to prevent disruptions” with their accessories and automations.

Apple claims that the new Home architecture is “more efficient and reliable” for managing compatible devices. Initially introduced in the iOS 16.2 beta, the feature was quickly rolled back due to numerous reports of compatibility issues with smart home devices. The new HomeKit architecture was reinstated with the release of iOS 16.4 in February 2023.

Due to the fact that upgrading to the new architecture disables support for the Home app on older iOS and macOS versions, some users have opted out of the upgrade. However, with this impending requirement, everyone will need to switch to the new architecture to continue using the Home app and their HomeKit accessories.

Details regarding the specific timing of this requirement from Apple remain vague, but it’s expected that iOS 19 will only support the new HomeKit architecture.

The public release of iOS 18.4 is anticipated in early April, which will also extend Apple Intelligence support to additional languages.
