Apple Maps Enhances EV Routing with Tesla Supercharger (NACS) Support for Ford Users

Apple is introducing a significant update to Apple Maps EV Routing for Ford users. Beginning today, drivers of the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning can utilize Apple Maps EV Routing through CarPlay to plan their journeys, incorporating Tesla Superchargers and any stations that utilize the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector.

As previously mentioned, Ford began providing CCS to NACS adapters last year, enabling Mach-E and Lightning drivers to access Tesla Superchargers. Until now, however, Apple Maps was not aligned with this change, meaning it only directed Mach-E and Lightning drivers to CCS charging stations, even though routes including Tesla Superchargers could have been more efficient.

With this update, Apple Maps via CarPlay will now recognize NACS fast charging stations, including Tesla Superchargers, in its route planning suggestions.

Ford elaborates in a blog post:

Apple Maps EV Routing on CarPlay enables drivers to input their route and see the estimated battery level upon arrival at their destination, along with suggested charging stations along the way if necessary. Previously, drivers of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning had to manually access a different app to enter a NACS fast charger as a destination. Now, with the integration of Apple Maps EV Routing and NACS fast chargers, the process is much smoother.

How to Utilize Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay:

  • Connect your Apple iPhone to CarPlay.
  • Open Apple Maps, access Settings, and confirm your preferred charging network(s). Ensure you select a NACS fast charging station, like a Tesla Supercharger. This setup is a one-time process.
  • Input your destination.
  • Apple Maps will then estimate the state of charge you will have upon reaching your destination.
  • If charging is necessary, it will automatically direct you to a NACS fast charging station based on the fastest route.*

This update greatly enhances the Apple Maps EV Routing experience for Ford drivers. On my wish list for future updates is the addition of battery preconditioning when using Apple Maps EV Routing. Android Auto implemented this feature last October.

The new functionality is available to iPhone users with iOS 17 or later. Your vehicle does not require any software updates.
