With the arrival of iOS 18.4, users can explore a variety of exciting new features. Among them is a notable enhancement to Apple Music, which now extends its capabilities beyond the app itself and into the Control Center and more.

Expanded Ambient Music Controls in iOS 18.4

Once you upgrade to iOS 18.4, you might find yourself checking your favorite apps for any changes.

You may notice that the Music app appears unchanged at first glance. However, the latest feature of Apple Music is cleverly integrated outside of the app itself.

Apple has introduced a novel feature by expanding Apple Music’s capabilities with a new set of Ambient Music controls in iOS 18.4.

This update essentially introduces innovative ways to access Apple Music ‘mood’ playlists without needing to open the Music app.

iOS 18.4 currently provides four different mood categories, and there’s potential for more to be included in future updates.

• Sleep
• Chill
• Productivity
• Wellbeing

Each mood control is designated to play a specific playlist. For instance, the Productivity option defaults to BEATstrumentals, but users can select from three other curated playlists or any playlist of their preference.

These new music controls can be assigned to any of the following locations:

2. Your Lock Screen
3. The iPhone’s Action button

To modify a control’s playlist setting, switch to editing mode, tap the control, and you’ll see customization options.

While the Music app will remain the primary method for most users to interact with Apple Music, I appreciate the innovative Ambient Music controls introduced in iOS 18.4. The option to assign a mood playlist button to your iPhone’s Lock Screen, Action button, or Control Center smooths out the music playback experience.
