iCloud storage often frustrates iPhone users who are reluctant to pay a monthly fee for cloud services, while the complimentary 5GB plan falls short of their needs. Recently, Apple has successfully navigated a legal challenge in the U.S. concerning its iCloud storage approach, with a judge ruling to dismiss the lawsuit.
Judge dismisses lawsuit after claims against Apple ruled to lack merit
Mike Scarcella reports for Reuters:
Apple has prevailed in a ruling that dismissed a lawsuit claiming the tech giant was illegally monopolizing the digital storage market, resulting in higher costs for consumers using its iCloud service.
U.S. District Judge Eumi Lee in San Jose, California, stated on Friday that the plaintiffs in this class-action suit failed to demonstrate that Apple breached federal or state antitrust regulations. However, she did allow them the option to revise and refile their complaint.
The lawsuit accused Apple of violating antitrust laws by pressuring users into utilizing its iCloud service for backing up essential data and device settings. Apple has consistently denied any misconduct.
The plaintiffs claimed that Apple monopolized cloud storage services on its devices, asserting that no other services could offer essential functions such as restoring an iPhone. They argued that Apple was unfairly driving up prices for iCloud storage.
While dismissing the lawsuit, Judge Lee expressed skepticism regarding the claims made. She remarked, “if anything, Apple’s purportedly high prices would motivate competitors to ramp up their output to capture market share from Apple.”
The judge also refuted the idea that buying iCloud storage is mandatory for users, stating that there was insufficient evidence to show that Apple possessed monopoly-like control in the cloud storage sector.
My main takeaway from this legal decision is that Apple’s 5GB iCloud storage plan likely won’t be changing shortly, nor will its paid storage alternatives.
