Apple Reintroduces AirPods Max Firmware with Lossless Audio Feature

As mentioned earlier today, Apple has rolled out a firmware update for the USB-C AirPods Max, introducing support for lossless audio. However, a bug in iOS 18.4 previously hindered the headphones from downloading this update. Apple has now fixed the issue with a re-release of the firmware that adds this new capability to AirPods Max.

AirPods Max Firmware Update Now Available with Lossless Audio

Apple’s support page for AirPods firmware now indicates that a new version, “7E101,” is available for the USB-C AirPods Max. The initial build released on Tuesday alongside iOS 18.4 was version 7E99.

For reasons not yet specified, the AirPods Max encountered issues while attempting to download and install the latest firmware. Consequently, users were unable to access the new feature allowing for lossless audio playback over USB-C. This update also enables ultra-low latency audio when connected via a USB-C cable and introduces wired playback for the first time using Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable.

To check the firmware version of your AirPods, navigate to Settings on your iOS device and select the AirPods menu at the top. Ensure your AirPods are connected to your iPhone or iPad first.

Unfortunately, updating AirPods firmware isn’t straightforward. Apple advises users who wish to receive the firmware update promptly to follow these steps:

  1. Ensure your device is running the latest iOS version (lossless audio support for USB-C AirPods Max necessitates iOS 18.4 or macOS 15.4).
  2. Connect your AirPods via Bluetooth to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  3. Confirm your Apple device is connected to Wi-Fi.
  4. Charge your AirPods by plugging them in.
  5. Keep your AirPods in their case and positioned near your device for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Wear your AirPods and verify the firmware version once more.

It’s important to note that the update adding lossless audio is exclusive to the USB-C version of the AirPods Max, which was released last year. The Lightning version will not receive this feature.
