The latest iPhone 16e comes packed with many of the cutting-edge features from the flagship iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models. However, it also has some unexpected drawbacks, one of which is particularly notable: the newest iPhone does not support Apple’s MagSafe technology.
The Newest iPhone Lacks Support for MagSafe Accessories
Apple introduced MagSafe technology to the iPhone lineup with the iPhone 12 in 2020, and it has been featured in all subsequent models, with the exception of the 2022 iPhone SE.
MagSafe enabled efficient and reliable wireless charging before standard Qi chargers reached their peak performance. Furthermore, it unlocked a vast array of accessory options.
Over the years, Apple has released various MagSafe products including wallets, different iPhone cases, a MagSafe battery, and a thriving market of third-party accessories.
For instance, I utilize a MagSafe TV mount with my Apple TV 4K to use the iPhone’s Continuity Camera feature for FaceTime. Additionally, my iPhone is securely attached to a MagSafe car mount during my drives—I’d find it inconvenient to be without it.
Given how prevalent MagSafe has become in the iPhone accessory landscape, its absence in the new iPhone 16e is quite surprising.
It’s worth mentioning that since the arrival of Qi2—enhancing wireless charging with features rooted in MagSafe technology—charging capabilities have significantly improved since the debut of MagSafe.
As a user of the iPhone 16 Pro, I don’t intend to upgrade to the iPhone 16e. However, my main concern would be not having access to the numerous MagSafe accessories, like wallets and car mounts, rather than wireless charging itself.
