Today, Apple has an exciting announcement for AirPods Max users. A software update scheduled for next month will introduce lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio capabilities to the AirPods Max.
According to Apple,
This update will enable AirPods Max to support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, ensuring that the fidelity of the original recordings is maintained. This enhancement allows listeners to experience music exactly as it was intended to be heard by the artist in the studio. Lossless audio will also be integrated with Personalized Spatial Audio, offering a more accurate, uncompressed, and immersive listening experience. Users can access over 100 million tracks in lossless audio through Apple Music.
In addition, the upcoming update will provide support for ultra-low latency audio on AirPods Max. This improvement will greatly reduce lag to achieve a response time comparable to the built-in speakers found on Mac, iPad, and iPhone.
This feature will particularly benefit gamers and livestreamers by significantly reducing lag, ensuring that audio performance is on par with the native speakers of Mac, iPad, and iPhone. The elimination of response delay will lead to smoother gameplay and an even more immersive livestreaming experience.
The software update is set to roll out in April as part of iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4. The new features will be available solely for AirPods Max users with USB-C. If you are still using a Lightning version of AirPods Max, now is the perfect time to upgrade.
Starting today, Apple has also launched a new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable, which will facilitate wired playback, allowing AirPods Max users to connect to 3.5mm audio sources. This feature was notably missing when the USB-C version of AirPods Max was first introduced last year.
