A new M4 MacBook Air might not be the only Mac to launch this week. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly preparing to unveil an upgraded Mac Studio featuring a high-performance M3 chip shortly.
“Although it’s not branded as an ‘Air’, the upcoming Mac Studio, internally known as J575, seems set for a release,” Gurman states. “It could be revealed as soon as this week alongside the refreshed MacBook Airs.”
As for the processor powering the new desktop Mac, the details may be unexpected.
“There are indications that the new models will include an M4 Max, but the forthcoming Ultra variant will actually be an M3 Ultra,” Gurman adds.
At present, Apple offers two variants of the Mac Studio. The M2 Max edition is priced at $1999, while the M2 Ultra model is available for $3999.
The M2 Ultra essentially combines two M2 Max chips. To date, Apple has not introduced an M3 Ultra or an M4 Ultra; the M3 and M4 series currently only feature Pro and Max versions.
Transitioning from M2 generation Mac Studio models to include an M4 Max and M3 Ultra would indeed be unusual and potentially perplexing, adding to its likelihood.
