As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is developing a second-generation model of its widely popular, budget-friendly item tracker, the AirTag, which was first launched in 2021. Here’s what we anticipate Apple will bring to AirTag 2.
New Features
According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 has moved forward in manufacturing testing, and there are three primary enhancements to look forward to:
- Extended range
- Upgraded wireless chip
- Enhanced privacy measures
Apple is reportedly planning to integrate a new ultrawide band chip in the upcoming AirTag, which could potentially increase tracking range by up to three times with precision finding capabilities. Users will have the ability to track their AirTags from distances of 30-90 meters, compared to the current range of 10-30 meters. The upgraded wireless chip may also boost location accuracy in less populated regions.
In previous instances, AirTags have been misused for stalking purposes, with some individuals modifying them to disable the built-in speaker, making it difficult for Apple to alert targets to the presence of an AirTag nearby. Enhanced anti-stalking features would ideally help those targeted to more easily locate any AirTags.
Expected Launch Date
The release of AirTag 2 is anticipated around mid-2025, as stated by Bloomberg:
Apple is developing a new AirTag — code-named B589 — set to launch approximately in the middle of next year.
In the meantime, if you’re thinking about purchasing the current version of AirTag, they are currently available at a discounted price, with a single AirTag priced at $24, and a 4-pack available for $69.99. This means that with the 4-pack, each AirTag costs roughly $18!
