The year has just kicked off, and Apple is setting its sights on 2025 with a significant expansion into Home products. Here are three new Home devices anticipated to launch this year.
Introduction of a ‘HomePad’ device
One of the most intriguing Home products slated for 2025 is Apple’s currently unspecified ‘HomePad’ device.
According to Mark Gurman:
Apple…is close to launching a new category of product: a wall-mounted display capable of controlling appliances, facilitating videoconferencing, and utilizing AI for app navigation…The device features a roughly 6-inch screen resembling a square iPad and is about the size of two iPhones placed side by side, complete with a thick edge around the display. It will also include a front-facing camera, a rechargeable built-in battery, and internal speakers.
Some anticipated features of the HomePad include:
- Enhanced AI capabilities with an improved Siri
- Widgets similar to StandBy, Home app controls, and additional features
- Slideshows from the Photos app
- Built-in security camera, audio/video intercom, and FaceTime functionality
- Compatibility with Apple apps such as Safari, Music, and Notes
As I’ve noted previously, this seems like a fantastic addition to any smart home.
Initially, Gurman indicated that the HomePad would be available in March, though he now suggests it might roll out in April alongside iOS 18.4. Regardless, we can expect this new category of Home devices from Apple to debut early this year.
Updated Apple TV 4K
Since the last Apple TV 4K was introduced a couple of years ago, Apple is set to unveil a new version this year.
Specifics regarding the refreshed Apple TV 4K remain limited, but we anticipate:
- Support for Apple Intelligence
- An A18 or A17 Pro chip to facilitate AI capabilities
- A new in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip
Additionally, Apple is likely to enhance support for the latest TV display technologies. Despite these improvements, the new Apple TV 4K will probably retain the same basic design and operating system as its predecessor.
The anticipated arrival for the new Apple TV 4K is the latter part of the year.
HomePod mini 2
While the larger HomePod is now in its second generation, the HomePod mini remains the same first-generation model released back in 2020.
However, we are finally anticipating the launch of the HomePod mini 2 this year.
Aside from a release timeframe and the incorporation of Apple’s new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, we’re not privy to much information regarding the new HomePod mini.
It’s possible that Apple will enable full Apple Intelligence support for this device, which would be a welcome enhancement.
Alternatively, the company may opt to deepen the integration of HomePod mini 2 with your iPhone or other devices, such as the HomePad. This would allow it to maintain its role as an affordable smart speaker while leveraging the capabilities of nearby devices. More insights into the HomePod mini 2 should emerge in the coming months.
Similar to the Apple TV 4K, the HomePod mini 2 is projected to launch in late 2025.
Summary of Apple’s Home Products
Apple’s renewed commitment to the smart home sector marks a substantial shift from its earlier approach, where Home products felt more like a side project. I remain optimistic that the company has a robust strategy for its Home offerings—there’s a great deal of potential here.
If Apple successfully establishes a powerful Home ecosystem, it might pave the way for even more innovative products in the future, possibly including a revival of the AirPort line.
