Apple is currently engaged in ongoing discussions with the EU regarding its compliance with regulations. A recent document released by the company highlights its upcoming plans to allow users to set default apps for navigation and translation. This means that users will finally have the option to designate Google Maps as their default app.
Upcoming default options for navigation and translation
On Friday, Apple shared its latest update on compliance with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The document primarily focused on the measures Apple has already implemented to conform with the DMA guidelines.
However, an essential insight was revealed (via MacRumors) regarding future compliance measures.
Here’s the notable excerpt:
In spring 2025, Apple will introduce support for setting default apps for navigation and translation.
This indicates that iPhone users in the EU will soon be able to do what many have been asking for over the years: set Google Maps as their go-to navigation app.
Despite Apple Maps continuously improving, many users prefer Google Maps for various reasons. Soon, they will have the ability to make it their default.
The addition of translation apps as default options is also a positive development, although it seems likely that the navigation defaults will receive more attention from users overall.
The mention of spring 2025 probably indicates that these features will be included in iOS 18.4, which is anticipated to be released in April.
Global launch of some default app options in iOS 18.2
In the recent iOS 18.2 beta, it was found that certain default app categories, previously believed to be exclusive to the EU, will be available globally. These include messaging and calling apps.
While Apple has yet to make an official announcement, it would be beneficial if the upcoming EU capabilities for navigation and translation defaults also rolled out worldwide.
