Apple to Release Software Update to Tackle Complaints About Apple Intelligence Notification Summary

Apple has acknowledged the rising concerns regarding the inaccuracies in Apple Intelligence notification summaries. In a statement released today, the company announced that it will implement a software update “in the upcoming weeks” to improve clarity on when Apple Intelligence is providing summaries of notifications…

As per a statement given to the BBC, an Apple representative remarked:

Apple Intelligence features are currently in beta, and we are actively enhancing the system through user feedback. A software update in the near future will better delineate when the displayed text is a summary generated by Apple Intelligence. We urge users to report any unexpected notification summaries they encounter.

The BBC has pointed out several instances where Apple Intelligence has misrepresented summaries from the BBC news app. In one notable case, it inaccurately indicated that Luigi Mangione, the individual charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had taken his own life. Last week, the BBC released another article showcasing multiple examples of erroneous Apple Intelligence summaries.

This statement is the first acknowledgment from Apple in response to the BBC’s concerns. The news outlet has asserted that misleading Apple Intelligence notification summaries “are damaging trust not only in the BBC but in news and information as a whole.”

Apple has yet to provide specific strategies for addressing these issues. At present, Apple Intelligence notification summaries are marked by a small icon at the beginning of the summarized text. The upcoming software update is expected to refine this interface to clarify that the text is AI-generated.

iOS 18.3 is currently undergoing beta testing and is projected to be available to the public later this month, with potential alterations to notification summaries included in that update.

You can manage the notifications that are summarized on your iPhone by navigating to the Settings app, selecting “Notifications,” and then tapping “Summarize Notifications.”
