Apple TV+ has built a reputation as a top destination for sci-fi content, featuring hits like Severance, Foundation, Dark Matter, and Silo. However, the platform is also expanding its repertoire of high-quality crime thrillers, and its upcoming release—Dope Thief—promises to be a standout.
Dope Thief set to launch on Apple TV+ next month, with an impressive trailer just released
When Apple TV+ debuted in 2019, it faced criticism for its limited library, exclusively featuring Apple originals.
In response, Apple has significantly expanded its offerings with a variety of original series, including additional seasons of popular shows like The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.
This enhanced lineup has helped distinguish TV+ as a prime source for sci-fi programming, uplifting comedies from Bill Lawrence, and now, crime thrillers are emerging as another hallmark.
Today, some of the most acclaimed and popular series on Apple TV+ fall within the crime thriller genre, such as:
Upcoming, Apple will unveil a new crime thriller titled Dope Thief on March 14.
The recently released trailer is nothing short of impressive.
I was intrigued by Dope Thief prior to the trailer’s release, but it has now become a must-watch in my book.
Behind the scenes of Apple’s upcoming crime thriller
Dope Thief is executive produced by Ridley Scott, who also directs the premiere episode. The series is created by Peter Craig, known for co-writing major films like The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Town.
The experience from these films, especially The Town and to an extent Matt Reeves’ The Batman, has certainly equipped Craig to helm a major crime-based series like Dope Thief.
Apple describes the show as follows:
Based on Dennis Tafoya’s novel “Dope Thief,” the series tells the story of lifelong friends and delinquents from Philadelphia who, posing as DEA agents, attempt to rob an unmarked house in the countryside. However, their small-time scheme spirals into a life-and-death situation as they inadvertently expose and dismantle the largest hidden drug corridor along the Eastern Seaboard.
The cast of Dope Thief features Brian Tyree Henry, Wagner Moura, Ving Rhames, and others.
The first two episodes will premiere on Friday, March 14, followed by new episodes released weekly until April 25.
While Dope Thief diverges in both tone and genre from Severance, if it lives up to the high expectations set by its trailer, it might serve as the ideal follow-up to retain Severance viewers subscribed to TV+ when the current season concludes on March 21.
Apple TV+ is available for a subscription of $9.99 per month.
