Apple TV+ has officially terminated one of its flagship series and the longest-running comedy in its catalog: Mythic Quest is coming to an end. Here’s what you need to know.
Mythic Quest concludes after four seasons on Apple TV+
Mythic Quest is a comedic series centered around the workplace dynamics within the video game industry.
The show debuted on February 7, 2020, and has recently completed its fourth season on Apple TV+.
It has consistently been regarded as one of Apple’s top comedy offerings, earning praise from both critics and audiences alike.
Unfortunately, it seems that the dedicated viewership wasn’t substantial enough for Apple to continue its production.
According to Joe Otterson at Variety, Apple TV+ has decided to cancel the show after its fourth season:
“Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, ‘Mythic Quest’ is coming to a close,” shared series executive producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney. “We’re immensely proud of the show and the universe we created—and deeply thankful to every cast and crew member who dedicated their passion to it. To all our fans, thank you for joining us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for having faith in our vision from the very beginning. Understanding that endings are challenging, with Apple’s support, we made one final adjustment to our last episode—so we could say farewell, rather than just game over.”
This last detail is significant: Apple has permitted a modification to the season 4 finale which will presumably enable the series to achieve a more appropriate conclusion.
A revised finale is set to be released sometime this week, as noted by Variety.
DMN’s Perspective
For many, the cancellation of Mythic Quest may come as a shock.
Not only has the show enjoyed a substantial run, but it also recently saw the launch of a spin-off series, Side Quest.
While no official explanation has been provided for the cancellation, I observed that during its fourth season, Mythic Quest wasn’t performing strongly on the Apple TV+ top charts.
This issue would be problematic in any context, but especially concerning given that Mythic Quest aired concurrently with the second season of Severance.
If a show struggles to gain traction during a time when Apple TV+ has an active audience, its prospects for survival on the platform become increasingly bleak.
