Apple is poised to unveil a new version of the Apple Watch SE later this year, representing its first update in three years. While the most affordable Apple Watch might not seem terribly exciting, this year could be different.
Is a Plastic Casing and Lower Price on the Horizon?
The original Apple Watch SE was launched in 2020, starting at $279. Upon the arrival of its second-generation model in 2022, the price was dropped to $249, accomplished by replacing the ceramic case back with a nylon composite.
This pattern may continue with the upcoming third generation of the Apple Watch SE. Reports suggest that Apple might replace the aluminum casing with a new “rigid plastic,” according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, which could facilitate a reduced price point:
The company is also developing a new iteration of its more affordable Apple Watch SE model, which was last refreshed in 2022. One idea under consideration involves switching from aluminum to rigid plastic for the enclosure.
While it’s uncertain how much lower the price of the Apple Watch SE might go, there’s speculation that the new model could begin at $229 or perhaps even $199. However, the anticipated plastic design is reportedly facing some internal hurdles, which might delay its release. If it’s not brought to market, a lower starting price may not materialize.
New Chipset Expected
As seen with most Apple product updates, the new Apple Watch SE will likely include a new chipset. Currently, it features the S8 chip from 2022, which is also present in the flagship Apple Watch Series 8.
The S11 chip is expected to debut in this year’s Apple Watch SE, offering enhanced performance and efficiency for its users.
Potential New Health Features
While not confirmed, there’s a possibility that Apple could introduce additional health features with the Apple Watch SE 3. Recent Apple Watch models are equipped with Sleep Apnea detection, ECG capabilities, and a Blood Oxygen sensor (not yet available in the US)—features that the current Apple Watch SE lacks.
These health features provide valuable insights, and Apple may decide to incorporate some into its most budget-friendly watch to extend new health benefits to a broader audience.
Expected Release Date
