If you’ve been optimistic about the potential release of a new “mini” variant of the iPhone, it might be time to reconsider. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has indicated that Apple currently has no plans to introduce another “iPhone mini” model.
In a recent Q&A session with Bloomberg subscribers, Gurman fielded a question regarding the chances of Apple producing a device similar to the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. His response was:
You know, we’ll see what the market tells Apple. Right now they’re not working on anything. They’re not working on a smaller iPhone right now. They’ve really shifted away. They’re trying to make that, you know, roughly 6-inch display that is the base size, and they’re just trying to go bigger and bigger and bigger. And the bigger you go, the smaller the 6-inch phones feel.
This news may not come as a shock, as there have been no signs that Apple was considering a new iPhone mini model. However, there is a dedicated (and quite vocal) segment of iPhone users yearning for this size to make a comeback, so this revelation may be disheartening for them.
Apple launched the iPhone 12 mini featuring a 5.2-inch screen back in 2020 and followed it up with the iPhone 13 mini the subsequent year. In 2022, with the introduction of the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple ceased the “mini” form factor in favor of the iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 13 mini remained available as a budget-friendly option until it was discontinued in 2023.
This year, the iPhone 16 Plus is set to be succeeded by the launch of the sleek iPhone 17 Air. It appears that neither the “mini” nor the “Plus” strategies met Apple’s expectations.
