After the launch of iOS 18.4 on Tuesday, Apple also introduced a firmware upgrade for the AirPods Max, enabling lossless audio through USB-C. However, shortly after the rollout, the update was retracted.
AirPods Max firmware update with lossless audio is no longer accessible
According to Aaron Peris, the firmware with build number 7E99 for the USB-C AirPods Max, which was made available yesterday, has been withdrawn. A dedicated support page on Apple’s website now states that the new firmware for the AirPods Max is “coming soon.”
Previously, Apple had announced an upcoming update for the USB-C AirPods Max that would allow for lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio when connecting via USB-C. This new firmware also introduces wired playback for the first time using Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable, a feature that was only available for AirPods Max with a Lightning port.
The reason for the update’s withdrawal remains unclear, but it is likely that Apple identified a significant bug.
To check the firmware version of your AirPods, navigate to the Settings on your iOS device and look for the AirPods menu at the top of the screen. Make sure you’ve connected your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad beforehand.
Updating your AirPods firmware isn’t straightforward, as it occurs automatically in the background. According to Apple, here are the steps to prepare for an AirPods update:
- Ensure your device is running the latest version of iOS (lossless audio on USB-C AirPods Max requires iOS 18.4 or macOS 15.4).
- Pair your AirPods via Bluetooth with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Confirm that your Apple device is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Connect your AirPods to a charger.
- Keep your AirPods in their case and positioned near your device for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Wear your AirPods and recheck the firmware version.
It’s important to note that the lossless audio update is exclusive to the USB-C version of the AirPods Max released last year. The Lightning variant will not receive this feature.
