One of the aspects Apple excelled at when establishing macOS (originally OS X) was enabling users to operate their computers as limited users. Utilizing a Standard user account is a fantastic way to enhance your macOS security, particularly in enterprise environments. The Mac team at SAP has recently launched Privileges 2.1, featuring impressive enhancements that assist IT teams in granting their users administrative privileges as required.
About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers oversaw an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. Drawing from his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, a mobile device management system, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, and thousands of Macs and iPads, Bradley shares insights into how Apple IT managers implement Apple devices, build supportive networks, train users, share stories from the field of IT management, and suggest improvements for Apple’s products aimed at IT departments.
What’s New in Privileges 2.1?
This 2.1 update to Privileges introduces a menu bar status item, catering to users who prefer not to keep the app in the Dock. Users can now renew their admin privileges proactively rather than having to wait for them to expire—notifications will be sent one minute prior to expiration, but access can also be renewed at any time through the app, Dock icon, menu bar, or PrivilegesCLI. For Apple IT teams, version 2.1 now allows specifying certain macOS users to retain their admin rights at login via a configuration profile deployed through your device management system.
Additional enhancements to Privileges include the ability to customize the help button, allowing it to be hidden or redirected to an internal IT support page instead of the default GitHub page. Apple IT teams can also send custom data to the app—such as a machine’s serial number or hostname—through the webhook, improving tracking and automation. To broaden accessibility, the update now features Bulgarian localization.
Conclusion
This app may appear straightforward, yet it is excellent for enhancing macOS security across your organization. SAP’s choice to offer this app free of charge provides noticeable advantages to the entire Mac Admins community (consider supporting the Mac Admins Foundation!). Managing admin privileges on macOS requires balancing security and user productivity. With Privileges 2.1, Apple IT teams can enjoy greater flexibility and control regarding when and how users elevate their access, while maintaining robust security policies. For organizations striving to find the right equilibrium between productivity and security in their Mac deployments, this update elevates Privileges as an even more indispensable tool for efficient permission management.
