The iPhone 16e is not a “budget” option like the iPhone SE. Unlike the previous iPhone SE that bore an outdated design and lacked key features, the iPhone 16e offers contemporary functionality at a more accessible price. It boasts an expansive display, Face ID, USB-C compatibility, and a robust chip. This makes it an ideal choice for businesses purchasing large quantities of iPhones, justifying the $599 price tag. When compared to the iPhone 16, it offers tremendous value and can potentially be free with a cellular contract.

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers oversaw an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. His background in deploying and managing firewalls, switches, mobile device management systems, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs, and iPads will provide insights on how Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, establish supportive networks, train users, recount real IT management scenarios, and suggest improvements for Apple’s offerings to IT departments.

Bulk Purchases Matter for Businesses

Since the introduction of Apple Silicon, I’ve maintained that the MacBook Air should be the go-to option for deployment. IT and procurement teams should opt for a Pro model only when absolutely necessary. This can translate to significant savings, as procurement can save $100 or $200 on each device for a workforce of 10,000 employees. This principle is where the iPhone 16e shines. In terms of positioning, it stands as the MacBook Air for iPhones.

The iPhone 16e offers a cost-effective alternative without compromising essential business requirements. It seamlessly integrates all of Apple’s device management features from the start, streamlining deployment, security, and control. For organizations acquiring thousands of iPhones, the focus is not merely on having the top-tier or most powerful model. Instead, it’s about having dependable, cost-efficient, and durable devices. The iPhone 16e provides that balance at a price of $599.

Ideal for Warehouse Use and Scanning Features

Across logistics and retail sectors, the iPhone has emerged as the preferred device for barcode scanning, inventory tracking, and order management. The iPhone 16e features a spacious, vibrant display, exceptional battery longevity, and USB-C, making it a solid option for businesses that require reliable “workstation”-like devices. When combined with iOS applications for scanning and warehouse oversight, it transforms into a robust, efficient tool for personnel managing inventory or utilizing it as a mobile POS system.

However, a drawback is the absence of MagSafe. While I understand Apple’s rationale for excluding it, this is a significant downside for the 16e. The lack of MagSafe means that businesses will need to depend on USB-C charging solutions instead. MagSafe would provide a very convenient method to keep devices charged without the hassle of manual charging in kiosk setups. I would hope to see a future iteration include MagSafe along with a Kensington lock-type security feature.

Not for Everyone, and That’s Acceptable

If your assessment of the iPhone 16e’s features leads you to prefer a more upscale model, then this device isn’t tailored for you. It’s designed specifically for business clientele. The iPhone 16e avoids flashy characteristics, and that’s intentional. It isn’t created for consumers looking to upgrade from the iPhone 15 Pro; rather, it’s meant for businesses needing dependable devices deployed en masse.

With Apple’s chips now so advanced, even an entry-level iPhone can operate seamlessly for several years. With numerous iOS updates, robust security, and Apple’s enterprise management utilities, businesses can confidently implement the 16e, assured of its performance at a significant cost-saving.

Additionally, for business clients purchasing through their mobile carriers, this iPhone may be available at no cost or at a minimal expense with a contract. The iPhone 16e presents an attractive price point for enterprises, and I wouldn’t hesitate to deploy 10,000 units.
