According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple isn’t developing a new version of its AirPort wireless router at this time. Nevertheless, the company is reportedly exploring other options that could function as a wireless access point, so there’s still a glimmer of hope.
We received updated details earlier this month regarding Apple’s proprietary wireless networking chip, known as Proxima. This chip is expected to be integrated into various home-related devices, including the Apple TV and HomePod, while also being featured in the iPhone 17 and subsequent Mac models.
What’s particularly intriguing about this new chip is its advanced capabilities, which could allow Apple to potentially repurpose it as a wireless router:
The Proxima chip is advanced enough that it could theoretically transform a home device like an Apple TV or HomePod into a wireless access point. Google has previously launched products that combine a Wi-Fi router with a smart speaker.
Gurman mentions that the wireless features of the upcoming Apple TV and HomePods might not be prominently showcased, especially if Apple decides not to activate the wireless access point capabilities.
Regardless, it’s exciting to think about the possibility. If Apple chooses to pursue it, we could see a new Apple-designed wireless access point in our homes again, reminiscent of the AirPort Express. Many users have wished for this since Apple’s AirPort lineup was discontinued years ago, with the last device released in 2013.
