Apple’s First Foldable iPhone May Offer Crease-Free Display, But Will Be Priced Over 00 and Skip Face ID

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed insights about the anticipated Apple foldable iPhone, which is expected to debut in 2026.

Kuo indicates that the foldable iPhone will be positioned as a premium device, with a price tag that could surpass $2000. However, consumers can expect top-notch specifications, including a display that remains creaseless even when folded, a hinge made of stainless steel and titanium alloy, and an overall thickness of just 4.5 mm when unfolded. Despite the slim profile, Kuo suggests that Face ID may not be included in the initial version, bringing back Touch ID instead.

Kuo points out that the need to keep the device slim and manage internal space may hinder the integration of the Face ID module in the first-generation foldable iPhone. Instead, users will have Touch ID biometric authentication via a capacitive side button, similar to the Touch ID on the iPad Air, marking the first iPhone without a home button to incorporate fingerprint recognition.

The analyst envisions the device featuring a folding book design with an inner display measuring around 7.8 inches and an outer display of 5.5 inches. This configuration suggests that when unfolded, the iPhone will resemble the screen size of an iPad mini. Additionally, Apple is thought to be working on a foldable MacBook/iPad featuring an 18-inch display and the same invisible crease technology.

Regarding the camera setup, Kuo believes the device will come equipped with two cameras: a front-facing camera designed to function in both folded and unfolded states, and a rear camera featuring dual lenses.

According to Kuo, the foldable iPhone will measure approximately 4.5 mm in thickness when unfolded and about 9.5 mm when folded. While this is not the slimmest foldable design available, it is competitive, as leading models from brands like Samsung typically measure around 12 mm when folded.

Final specifications are expected to be confirmed soon, with mass production slated for the fourth quarter of next year. The initial production run of the foldable iPhone will be relatively low-volume due to its intricate manufacturing process. Kuo predicts shipments will range from 3 to 5 million units in 2026, with total sales reaching around 20 million by 2027, including a second-generation model anticipated for a release in the latter half of 2027.
