Apple’s Humanoid Robot May Gain a Significant Edge as Meta Unveils Its Project

Recent findings indicate that Apple and Meta might soon find themselves competing in the realm of humanoid robotics. Meta is reportedly making a “significant investment” in this sector, particularly aimed at domestic tasks.

If Apple follows through with its potential plans for a home robot, it could leverage a significant edge in this emerging market…

Apple’s Robotic Aspirations

The mention of “robot” often conjures images of a sci-fi humanoid capable of household duties – akin to a robotic butler.

Apple is believed to be exploring this type of technology. According to Bloomberg, the project is currently characterized as a “skunk-works project,” which refers to initiatives undertaken by small teams functioning independently from the larger corporate structure.

At that time, I opined that such advancements are still likely a decade away, assuming Apple continues on this path. Indeed, a recent report suggested we could still be waiting several years for even a basic tabletop robot, especially following the introduction of that charming table lamp.

Bloomberg also notes that Meta is increasingly interested in AI-driven humanoid robots, viewing it as a pivotal area of focus.

Meta has recognized its next major investment: AI-enabled humanoid robots. The firm is dedicating substantial resources to this category—futuristic robots designed to emulate human behavior and aid in physical tasks […].

The company plans to develop its own humanoid robot hardware, prioritizing domestic applications, and has begun talks with several robotics firms, including Unitree Robotics and Figure AI Inc […].

On Friday, Meta confirmed to employees the establishment of this new team.

Interestingly, indications are that Meta’s initial robot may not be branded with its name; instead, the company seems more intent on supplying the AI capabilities for devices crafted by other manufacturers. Nonetheless, there may be Meta-branded robots introduced in the future.

While I view advanced domestic robots as a long-term objective, the presence of multiple competitors in this space could accelerate development. Meta’s entry into this arena might prompt Apple to advance its humanoid robot ambitions from a mere concept to something more substantial.

Thus far, autonomous robots have primarily focused on commercial applications. This includes Boston Dynamics’ Spot, a dog-like robot engineered for patrol and inspection tasks, which resembles something from a alarming dystopian science fiction narrative where such entities hunt humans. However, the company is also developing the humanoid Atlas model for usage in warehouses and manufacturing environments.

Transitioning these technologies to domestic tasks will likely take considerably more time due to the differing price points required for consumer models. Tesla, for instance, is developing a model expected to retail for $30,000, a very niche market unless the price is unexpectedly lowered from the typical Tesla price range.

Apple’s Potential Competitive Edge

For many, the idea of welcoming a humanoid robot into their home could be a daunting thought, as it might feel as intrusive as having a stranger with various recording devices inside.

Apple’s strong emphasis on privacy and its well-established reputation could provide it with a considerable advantage in this space.
