Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack for iPhone Deserves Continued Exploration Beyond a One-Time Experiment

After the launch of MagSafe charging with the iPhone 12, Apple introduced the MagSafe Battery Pack accessory. Featuring in-depth iOS integration and the unique capability of reverse wireless charging, it became a desirable addition for iPhone owners and quickly found a place in my daily essentials.

Regrettably, it turned out to be yet another short-lived accessory from Apple that was phased out with the iPhone 15.

The MagSafe Battery Pack didn’t revolutionize the market, and it wasn’t without flaws. For example, it lacked sufficient power to fully charge most iPhone 12 models from 0% to 100%, providing just a modest 5W output.

Nonetheless, it offered excellent integration with iOS, showcasing attractive animations when attached to the iPhone. It also synced with the iOS battery widget, appearing alongside your iPhone, AirPods, and other Apple gadgets.

The reverse wireless charging feature is also noteworthy, allowing users to recharge the MagSafe Battery Pack by plugging in their iPhone to power. The iPhone would charge first, followed by the MagSafe Battery Pack.

It’s essential to mention that while the MagSafe Battery Pack is technically still usable with current iPhones, it requires either an existing pack or an aftermarket purchase. You’ll need to deal with the Lightning connector, and considering that iPhone batteries have grown larger over the years, the MagSafe Battery Pack may struggle to keep pace with the power demands of newer models.

Current Market Landscape

Today, there are numerous alternatives to the MagSafe Battery Pack, many of which present several enhancements over Apple’s version.

My top recommendation is the Anker MagGo Power Bank, which conveniently attaches magnetically to the back of your iPhone. It charges at 15W and can elevate an iPhone 16 from empty to 50% in just 45 minutes. This model even includes a built-in kickstand and a small display on the side indicating the battery pack’s current charge.

Another non-MagSafe alternative is the Anker Nano Power Bank, a compact accessory featuring a foldable design that plugs directly into your iPhone’s USB-C port, providing an all-in-one solution.

Nonetheless, I miss Apple’s earlier dedication to MagSafe accessories for iPhone. The MagSafe Battery Pack is now discontinued, the MagSafe Duo has been eliminated, and there are no indications of new accessories on the horizon. It seems Apple has handed over the responsibility of crafting MagSafe accessories to third-party manufacturers.

We should also remember Apple’s past efforts in the battery pack arena with the Smart Battery Case, which last saw a release for the iPhone 11 and hasn’t made a return since.
