Apple’s New ‘HomePad’ Is the Perfect Home Device I’ve Been Looking For

Apple is set to introduce a new home gadget in early 2024, as reported in detail by Mark Gurman. The device, tentatively called ‘HomePad’, appears to be just what I’ve been hoping for in terms of smart home technology.

Home products have been a niche endeavor for Apple

Historically, Apple’s foray into smart home devices has seemed insufficient.

The company created HomeKit to facilitate home automation and played a role in the development of Matter to enhance cross-platform compatibility.

However, Apple has largely relied on third parties to create home devices.

Exceptions to this trend include the Apple TV 4K, HomePod, and HomePod mini.

However, these devices have always felt more like side projects from Apple.

They receive some focus from the company, yet none are intended to transform home automation into a significant revenue stream for Apple.

With the anticipated HomePad (my suggested name), it seems Apple is ready to make a serious commitment to the smart home market.

Features of the upcoming HomePad

The HomePad promises to deliver flexibility and capabilities not currently available in any other home device.

If you’re interested in a quick overview of its features, this Gurman post on X includes the details:

  • Emphasis on Siri, Communication, and Home Control
  • Operates Safari, Music, Notes, and various other Apple apps but lacks an App Store.
  • Engaged via touch, primarily managed by voice with Apple Intelligence’s new App Intents feature.
  • New operating system combining elements of watchOS and iOS StandBy Mode. The interface adapts based on proximity.
  • Approximately the size of two iPhones placed side by side, featuring a 6-inch display, speakers, FaceTime camera, and battery.
  • Apple is developing wall mounts as well as a base for desks, tables, kitchens, and bedside tables.
  • Strong focus on security, including audio/video intercom features for homes with multiple Apple devices.
  • Customizable home screen with classic Apple widgets and home controls.
  • Integrates with video doorbells and cameras, providing security alerts as a crucial feature.

It’s evident that HomePad will significantly extend capabilities beyond what the current HomePod can offer.

Reasons to consider purchasing multiple HomePads

According to Gurman, Apple “aims to encourage consumers to purchase multiple units, enabling them to place them around their homes for frequent use.”

From my perspective, investing in several HomePads seems practical, especially from a home security standpoint, as the integrated camera is likely to function similarly to a HomeKit security camera. I’ve always wanted to install cameras in multiple rooms but hesitated due to cost.

The HomePad offers an ideal solution, as it promises to deliver more than just a video feed.

I’m also excited about having StandBy-style widgets and Photos slideshows constantly available on displays throughout my home, providing delightful surprises with random favorite moments.

Additionally, the HomePod-like functionality of being able to access Siri from anywhere in the house is a plus. Since HomePad supports Apple Intelligence, the built-in Siri will provide significantly enhanced utility compared to what is currently present on the HomePod.

My only minor concern is that the HomePad’s display appears relatively small. However, I imagine Apple conducted extensive testing of screen dimensions before determining the final design, so it likely won’t be an issue, particularly with plans to have a device in every room.

In summary, while Apple envisioned the HomePod occupying all corners of users’ homes, the HomePad appears poised to truly deliver enough value to fulfill that goal, and hopefully at a price that makes buying more than one a realistic option.
