Recent reports indicate that the iPhone 17 Pro’s chassis might consist of aluminum instead of titanium, which would represent a departure from the significant feature Apple previously emphasized in the Pro models.
However, a leaker known for their accuracy contests this claim, asserting that Apple will “of course” maintain the use of titanium in next year’s high-end models. This discrepancy may arise from misunderstood terminology…
Apple’s Introduction of Titanium in 2023
Historically, Apple has distinguished between the standard and Pro versions of the iPhone based on the materials used in the chassis—aluminum for the former and stainless steel for the latter.
In a significant shift last year, both the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max transitioned from stainless steel to titanium chassis. Apple positioned this change as a major advancement, featuring it prominently in the press release.
Apple today unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, crafted from aerospace-grade titanium that is not only strong but also lightweight, making these the lightest Pro models from Apple yet.
The company further elaborated:
“This is the most pro lineup we have ever created, showcasing a cutting-edge titanium design.”
“The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max feature a robust and lightweight titanium construct—a first for iPhones. This premium alloy, commonly used in aerospace applications, offers one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios among metals, making this Apple’s lightest Pro series ever.”
Titanium or Aluminum Next Year?
However, The Information reported last week that next year’s Pro models might revert to aluminum from titanium.
“In addition to the iPhone 17 Air, all other iPhone models will undergo major design revisions next year. For example, they are expected to transition to aluminum frames instead of stainless steel and titanium,” one source mentioned.
Leaker Instant Digital has raised objections to this information.
“Of course, the 17 Pro is titanium. Why would you change it to aluminum? It’s hard to even consider that. Over recent years, Apple has emphasized the premium materials of the Pro series as a key selling point, transitioning from ‘surgical-grade stainless steel’ to ‘titanium’. How could it possibly switch to aluminum?”

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that some potentially vague language might be contributing to the confusion. The Information used the term “frame,” which in Apple’s vernacular, already refers to a different component. Apple designates the “band” around the display as titanium, while calling the internal aluminum structure the “frame” or “substructure.” The highlighted text below emphasizes this distinction:
“Utilizing an industry-exclusive thermo-mechanical process, the titanium BANDS surround a new SUBSTRUCTURE made entirely from recycled aluminum, securely bonding these two metals with extraordinary strength through solid-state diffusion. The aluminum FRAME enhances thermal dissipation and enables quick replacement of the back glass.”
Secondly, while Instant Digital has a commendable track record, it’s worth noting that they are articulating a logical standpoint rather than providing direct information from supply chain sources.
