MONROE, La. (KNOE) – It seems that a new scam emerges every day.
In celebration of National Consumer Protection Week, the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau are providing resources to help protect consumers from fraudulent schemes.
BBB Safety Recommendations
- Don’t send money to someone you haven’t met – If someone you don’t know asks you to wire money, use a prepaid debit card, or send gift cards, resist the request.
- Never click on links or attachments in unsolicited emails or texts — Scammers can install malware on your devices via links.
- Don’t trust your Caller ID — Caller ID can easily be manipulated. If you didn’t initiate the call, proceed with caution.
- Research companies — Before engaging with any unfamiliar company, check their credibility at BBB.org.
- Obtain details in writing — Although it may take some time, always ensure you read the fine print before proceeding.
- Limit sharing on social media — Scammers can exploit the information you post online. Ensure you’re not giving them any leverage against you.
- Keep track of your accounts — Regularly inspect your bank statements and investigate any unfamiliar transactions, no matter how small. Scammers often start with nominal amounts to test your alertness.
