WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The Bell County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking into a Bitcoin scam that is being conducted under the department’s name.
Officials from the department report that two victims have stepped forward after receiving communications from scammers claiming that they have an arrest warrant due to failure to appear for jury duty or related legal issues.
According to BCSO, these scammers often use real names of personnel from the department, as well as fabricated identities, to lend credibility to their schemes.
In a recent case, the sheriff’s office indicated that a victim got a voicemail requesting a return call.
The scam in question involves a demand for $25,000 to be deposited into a Bitcoin Kiosk located at South Ann and Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Harker Heights, according to BCSO.
Documents sent via text to the victim contained instructions on how to transfer the funds.
BCSO notes that victims are typically instructed to remain on the phone throughout the duration of the scam.
The sheriff’s office has identified some phone numbers used by the scammers, including 682-281-6021 and 254-263-9924, but warns that scammers can easily manipulate any phone number.
While this particular scam is asking for $25,000 through the Bitcoin Kiosk at South Ann and Veterans Memorial Boulevard, the sheriff’s office cautions that any amount could be requested, and any kiosk may be involved.
BCSO reminds the community that they never collect fines or use Bitcoin or gift cards for payments.

“We urge the public to stay alert against these criminals,” BCSO stated in a Facebook post. “It is important to verify any communication from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer. Any legitimate officer would want you to feel secure in your interaction.”
