United Airlines to Incorporate Apple’s Share Location Feature in Its Mobile App

Last month, Apple unveiled a new Share Item Location feature designed to assist in tracking AirTags and other Apple devices, announcing partnerships with over 15 airlines that would accept links from passengers to locate lost baggage.

Apple users have often placed AirTags in their checked luggage. Being able to monitor the status of your bags aboard the flight provides peace of mind, and in case of mishandling, retrieving them becomes significantly easier.

Share Item Location simplifies the process

The newly released iOS 18.2 features Share Item Location. This option allows anyone with a tracked item through Find My — whether it’s an iPhone or a bag equipped with an AirTag — to share a link with the airline for real-time tracking.

Apple has stated that more than 15 airlines will accept these tracking links.

In the upcoming months, over 15 airlines serving millions globally — including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling — will start using Find My item locations to enhance their customer service for locating lost or delayed luggage. More airlines will join the initiative over time.

United Airlines integrates into mobile app

To facilitate the sharing of links, United Airlines announced that customers can paste these directly into the airline’s mobile application.

United has officially revealed the integration of Apple’s new Share Item Location feature for AirTag within its mobile app, a development expected to significantly enhance the customer service experience for the small fraction of customers who experience delayed luggage.

Available with iOS 18.2, Apple’s Share Item Location feature empowers United customers who travel with an AirTag or Find My network accessory to privately, securely, and seamlessly provide the location of their accessory to the airline’s customer service team, aiding in luggage recovery if mishandled.

If a bag is marked missing, customers can report delayed baggage through the app and include the tracking link. Customer service representatives will then have access to the bag’s location, expediting retrieval. Once the bag is returned to the customer, they can deactivate the tracking link.
