Bluesky Surpasses 15 Million Users as Users Seek X Alternatives

Bluesky, one of the rising microblogging platforms, has officially hit the landmark of 15 million registered users. Just a month ago, the platform boasted 13 million users, highlighting its rapid growth as users seek alternatives to X.

Bluesky keeps expanding but remains significantly behind competitors

This statistic was initially reported by Stats for Bluesky, a site that leverages the platform’s API to gather insights about the social network (sourced from The Verge). As per their findings, Bluesky now has over 15.2 million registered users. In contrast, just in November 2023, the number was a mere 2 million.

Despite its impressive growth, Bluesky is still trailing behind its competitors, especially X, which boasts over 500 million active users globally. Meta’s Threads has also outpaced Bluesky, with 275 million monthly active users and a burgeoning rate of over a million new sign-ups daily. Nevertheless, Bluesky is garnering increasing attention from users dissatisfied with both X and Threads.

A recent incident in Brazil, which resulted in a temporary ban of X, drove hundreds of thousands of Brazilians to explore Bluesky. Additionally, Elon Musk’s political entanglements with Donald Trump have spurred even more individuals to seek alternatives to X. Currently, Bluesky’s app ranks as the most downloaded in the US App Store, closely followed by Threads.

Launched in 2021 as a concept demonstrating the decentralized AT Protocol, Bluesky was funded by Twitter’s then-CEO Jack Dorsey, who announced the initiative in 2019. Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, Bluesky and X ultimately evolved into direct competitors.

Recently, Bluesky unveiled its intentions to roll out a paid subscription model featuring enhanced functionalities, akin to X Premium (previously Twitter Blue). The platform assures users that it will not obstruct free access to the social network.
