Why It Took Three Years for Severance Season 2 to Arrive and What to Expect from Its ‘Darker’ Return on Apple TV+

The wait for Severance season 2 has felt exceptionally long, but it’s finally just a month away. In a recent interview, insights were revealed about the delays in the show’s return and what fans can anticipate from its sophomore season on Apple TV+.

What to Anticipate from Severance Season 2

Vanity Fair recently conducted an interview with the show’s creative team, including creator and writer Dan Erickson and director and executive producer Ben Stiller. The article, authored by Anthony Breznican, delves into numerous aspects surrounding the popular series.

Expect significant conflicts to arise between the characters’ innies and outies:

new episodes [explore] the deeper aspects of the split identities of its four main characters, whose personal lives have been distinctly separated from their workplace memories, effectively making each one two different individuals with sometimes conflicting interests.

The inaugural season of Severance was already quite dark, but creator Dan Erickson hints that the next season will be even gloomier:

I believe things will get darker. We were keen to place our protagonists in a more frightening situation since the first season concluded with them stirring the pot. They initiate a small rebellion and achieve a degree of success, but the enigma for season two is: What unfolds when the bear retaliates? What are the consequences of their victory? Without revealing too much, I can say that the aftermath is drastically severe.

One anticipated event in season 2 that might take the story in a particularly odd direction is a Lumon corporate retreat.

Reportedly, the “core Innie team will embark on a field trip away from their macrodata refinement department to a snowy setting.”

Stiller adds: “Corporate retreats present their own set of challenges. You always have to plan a few steps ahead regarding how Lumon manipulates their employees through their corporate culture. Additionally, there are other team-building activities and dynamics that I believe serve an ulterior motive.”

Reasons for the Delay in Season Production

In addressing the nearly three-year hiatus between the first and second seasons of Severance, both Erickson and Stiller contributed their thoughts.

The delay results from two main factors: their perfectionist approach to ensuring everything is right, coupled with unfortunate disruptions due to strikes within Hollywood.

Erickson explains:

Occasionally, we would devise something that appeared flawless in theory, only to realize during shooting that it wasn’t quite right. We were never willing to compromise on ensuring it was perfect…[We had] several locations already planned and even partially constructed, only to come to the conclusion that they wouldn’t work. Those conversations with the studio are never pleasant.

Stiller further adds:

The writing of season two demanded time. We commenced filming in October 2022, but were halted by the strike in May [2023]. By that time, we had shot approximately 7 out of our 10 episodes. We then had to regroup post-strike. Preparing the show requires time, so we resumed filming in January [2024] and concluded the final three episodes by May.

The complete interview is a must-read for fans of Severance.

Season 2 of Severance will premiere its first episode on Friday, January 17. The entire first season is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
