The UK mobile carrier O2 has unveiled Daisy, an AI grandmother specifically designed to tie up scammers by keeping them engaged on the line for extended periods.
Individuals can report a scam call or text by sending the number to 7722, which will evaluate the information before adding it to a database of reported scams…
The longer a scammer is tied up on the phone, the fewer potential victims they can target.
This concept of deploying a bot for this purpose gained traction with the introduction of Lenny, a voice chatbot that selects from sixteen pre-recorded audio snippets of what sounds like a slower-speaking, tech-challenged older man. Lenny has also been employed to combat unsolicited marketing calls.
Though Lenny has a limited repertoire of responses, it has occasionally managed to keep unwanted callers on the line for over an hour.
O2 has now developed its own version powered by AI, named Daisy.
O2 has launched Daisy, a human-like AI ‘Granny’ designed to engage in real-time conversations with fraudsters, diverting them from genuine customers for as long as possible.
With Daisy highlighting the fact that callers may not be who they claim to be, O2 encourages users to stay cautious, let the AI handle ‘scambaiting,’ and report suspected scams and texts for free to 7726.
