Last month, OpenAI unveiled a significant upgrade to the ChatGPT app for macOS, introducing a feature that allows it to read on-screen content from various applications. The company is now launching an update that further enhances compatibility with Apple Notes and additional third-party applications.
What’s New in ChatGPT for macOS
As stated by OpenAI, the recent update for ChatGPT on macOS brings support for a wider range of third-party applications. Now, it can read content from Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip, among others. Additionally, the list of applications that ChatGPT can integrate with has expanded to include BBEdit, Android Studio, AppCode, and many more. Below is the complete list of newly supported applications for ChatGPT on Mac:
- New IDEs: BBEdit, MatLab, Nova, Script Editor, and TextMate;
- VS Code Forks: VSCode Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and WindSurf;
- JetBrains IDEs: Android Studio, AppCode, CLion, DataGrip, GoLand, IntelliJ IDEA, PHPStorm, PyCharm, RubyMine, RustRover, and WebStorm;
- Terminal Applications: Prompt and Warp;
- Productivity Applications: Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip.
Initially, this feature was limited to iTerm 2, Terminal, TextEdit, VS Code, and Apple’s Xcode. For example, users can instruct ChatGPT to read the code from an Xcode project and receive suggestions for improvement without the need to copy and paste the code into the app. It can also read content from multiple applications simultaneously, which is particularly beneficial for developers working with various tools.
To address privacy concerns, users maintain control over which applications ChatGPT can access for reading content. “You have the same controls over how this data is stored or processed as you ordinarily would over anything else in your conversation history,” OpenAI assures users.
Integration with third-party apps is currently available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. There has been no announcement regarding when, or if, this feature will be accessible to free ChatGPT users.
The ChatGPT app for macOS can be downloaded from OpenAI’s website. It is available at no cost, while ChatGPT Plus subscribers can log in to access their complete account functionalities. Notably, the recent release of macOS 15.2 allows users to interact with ChatGPT directly through Siri.
