ChatGPT for macOS Now Compatible with Third-Party Applications

This year, OpenAI introduced a dedicated ChatGPT application for macOS, enhancing the interaction experience for Mac users with the company’s AI chatbot. Now, OpenAI is rolling out a significant update to the ChatGPT app on Mac, featuring integration with third-party applications.

ChatGPT Now Supports macOS Applications

The latest update enables users to instruct ChatGPT to read content displayed on their screens within various applications. In this initial version, the third-party software integration includes developer tools such as VS Code, Terminal, iTerm2, and Apple’s Xcode.

During a demonstration observed by DMN, ChatGPT effectively interpreted code from an Xcode project, providing coding suggestions without requiring the user to manually transfer content into the ChatGPT application. It is capable of simultaneously reading information from multiple applications, which proves beneficial for developers.

OpenAI aims to broaden the app integration in the future. Currently, macOS ChatGPT users can exclusively access third-party application integration, but it does come with a limitation: the feature necessitates a paid ChatGPT subscription for the time being.

Starting today, subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Team will have access to third-party application integration on macOS, while Enterprise and Education users will see this feature roll out in the coming weeks. OpenAI expressed a desire to make this feature accessible to all users eventually, although a timeline for this is yet to be established.

For privacy considerations, users can manage when and which applications ChatGPT is permitted to access at any time.

Notably, macOS 15.2, currently in beta testing, will incorporate the anticipated ChatGPT integration with Siri. This enhancement allows users to ask questions related to the content visible on their screens. However, this integration isn’t yet applicable to specific applications.

You can download the ChatGPT app for macOS directly from OpenAI’s website. The app is available at no charge, while ChatGPT Plus subscribers can log in to utilize their complete account features. Additionally, OpenAI is also launching the ChatGPT app for Windows free of charge starting today.
